Recently, Indian government has decided to privatised 23 railway station and given in hand of private sector. These companies now will be able to give world-class facilities, develop food stalls, retaining rooms, play areas, etc. T companies will also be responsible for bringing up shopping malls, five star hotels and multiplexes on the stations.
Let us discuss, is it a good decision to privatise railway? Is it banificial for all of us:-
1. You will agree that there are so many things lacking in the railways. All actions are slow. Employees understands that they work slow like employees of other government departments.
2. These days passengers prefer comfortable journey. Despite efforts by railway the same is not being provided.
3. The condition of railway stations are very bad. There is no upto date maintenance and cleanliness. Employees are not working with a sense of responsibility.
4. Railway is a big department in the country. A very large number of people travel by train. Railway is a big source of revenue. There is, therefore, a requirement to give new look to railways to make it more attractive and effective. That will be possible when railway is given to privatised as there is a scope of lot of income out of railways. Big buisness people will invest adequate money in railway to make railway journey attractive.
5. The corruption in the railway department is known to all. Many people still travel without tickets. This is manipulated by the railway staff.
6. We see lots of cases of pilferages, thefts, damages, negligence and fire which are taking place every day.
Railway is paying a lot in the form of compensation. In a large number of cases the railway is unable to defend due to employees fault. This aspect can be properly addressed if the railway is given to private enterprise.
7. Strikes are taking place in railway and people are suffering. This will be finished if taken over by private enterprise.
8. You see many accidents are taking place. The main reasons are that people are not doing their duty and there has been utter carelessness on the part of railway employees.
9. Most of the trains are running late. People are suffering. Railway is running in loss. Who is responsible for this? Only railway employees. This needs improvement. This will possible only if taken over by a private body.
10. Railway trains are over-crowded during summer vacations. People want sufficient rail accommodation, luxury and all essential facilities in the trains. We see no improvement. This needs a special look. It can be possible when taken over by a private party.
11. India became independent 70 years back. There are still many places where there is no rail services. People have been denied rail services. The projects are not being carried out due to the problems of budget. If railway is given to private hands there will be parties who will undertake there projects for their commercial interests and run the trains.
